Border management services serve a law enforcement function with additional challenges including the trafficking of human beings, the trafficking of illegal goods, and irregular migration. Border management services need to be able to handle a broad range of duties whilst facing challenges of geography or high-volume transit points. Border management also comprises strong regional and international cooperation elements. Many transnational threats impact the work of border services in ways that do not affect ‘traditional’ areas of the security sector including defence.
